Virtual Workshop Series
Chemistry of Paint
December 5, 2025
6:30pm-9:30pm Eastern Time
Chemistry of Paint is part of our free, public STEAM Connections Workshop Series, a STEMNetX initiative designed to equip educators, homeschooling families, and community members with hands-on, classroom-ready STEAM activities. These workshops highlight practical, engaging ways to integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and math into everyday learning.
No prior experience required!
Led by Dr. Sarah Smith and Professor Bridgette Dennett from the University of Mary Washington, this workshop explores the fascinating intersection of chemistry and art. Participants will uncover the scientific principles behind pigments, binders, and color formation while creating their own paint samples through guided experimentation.
Attendees will:
Learn the chemical composition and behavior of different paint types
Explore how pigments, solvents, and binders interact at the molecular level
Conduct simple, safe, and replicable experiments great for classrooms or home learning
Understand how chemistry influences color, texture, and artistic materials
Leave with classroom-ready lesson ideas and hands-on activity guides
As part of the broader STEAM Connections Series, this workshop supports STEMNetX’s mission to expand accessible, high-quality STEM and STEAM learning opportunities while empowering educators with practical tools they can bring to their own programs and communities.
